I've got those Midnight Blues WIP 2

It's been slow progress this week but the saxophone is beginning to take shape.

I can't wait to let my creativity loose in the inside of the bell but I must be patient... more keys and levers and shiny bits to do first. My total admiration goes out to my artists friends that paint glass and other shiny stuff. I have lost count how many times I lose where I am on my ref photo and have to follow my way back from a spot I can recognise! Whoever invented the saxophone didn't really think about us poor artists with all the keys, levers and shiny metal rods.

  1. This is looking fantastic. My husband plays sax and people are always telling me to paint a picture with him playing. I look at the sax and think - Not me, too complicated - but I usually do quick landscapes. I look forward to seeing it finished.

    1. Yes I painted my husband playing the saxophone a couple years ago. This is a little easier as its only part of the saxophone and the pieces are bigger but its still easy to get lost. I have cut out a square from a piece of paper so their is a small hole that I can use to cover most of my reference. This helps most of the time but sometimes you need to see the whole picture to adjust the values and thats when I can easily get lost.

  2. I love detail, but know what you mean. I'm still finding my way around shiny stuff, from glass to water.

I love the detail in this saxophone though (and most of your work, comes to that), it appeals to that part of me which motivates my need to draw/paint

    1. Thanks John. Shiny stuff is really just painting what you see, not what you think you should see. Just look for the shapes and paint those.
